How to create an intentional vision statement for your new business

If you’re new to entrepreneurship, a compelling vision statement will guide your business growth and help you communicate your commitments to others.

This blog post will teach you how to craft an enduring vision for your business by breaking down the various parts of a vision statement. We’ve also included an example vision statement at the bottom of this post for inspiration. Let’s dive in!

1. Why does your company exist?

Your goal in business is to enhance the lives of the customers you serve. Ask yourself, will your coaching practice help people expand into their highest potential? Are your customers going to live more energized lives because of your organic coffee company? Does your advertising agency help businesses better connect with their audiences and in turn become more profitable? Your reason for existing will be the thing that fuels your business.

2. How do you want to impact the world?

Now that you know why your company exists, consider how it will positively impact people and the planet. It’s also important to think about the scale at which you’ll create meaningful change in the world. Perhaps you’re opening a gym that will support your local community in building strong and capable bodies. Or, maybe you’re starting an e-commerce company with a mission to sell products around the world from sustainability-focused artisans. It doesn’t matter whether your scope of impact is small or large, what’s important is you’re clear on the change you wish to influence.

3. What are your business goals?

Think about what’s most important for you and your business to accomplish. Is it recognition for industry-leading quality? Earning enough revenue to support a team of ten incredible employees? Servicing the community you live in with the best local products? Let it be simple. The things that matter to you are what will guide your business forward.

An example vision statement

In recent months, Swedish Dishcloths have gained tremendous popularity. If you haven’t heard of them before, think of them as a reusable alternative to paper towels. Here’s a vision statement we developed for a hypothetical Swedish Dischloth startup:

“We exist to help people clean their homes more sustainably. Our Swedish Dishcloths eliminate 250,000 rolls of paper towels every year for our customers which saves trees and helps keep our planet clean. With our business, we’re aiming to be the number one paper towel alternative by 2025.”

P.S. Speaking of Spanish Dishcloths, if you’re on the hunt for some yourself, our favorite Canadian company to purchase them from is Goldilocks Goods!

Once you’ve crafted your vision statement, you might want to take your business planning a step further by drafting a mission statement, deciding on a business model, and developing your brand identity. Our guided journal for entrepreneurs, Bedside Business Plan, will help you clarify your next steps and build a foundation for lasting success — all in just a few minutes a day before bed!

We can’t wait to see what you create!
